Mike's Town Hall Meetings

I am happy to announce that we have scheduled Town Hall Meetings for the 2010 Legislative Session.  I host these meetings to provide an opportunity for constituents to share issues and concerns on their minds, as well as discuss options for improving our state and community.  The meetings will be held at 9:00 am each date at the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center in Mission (at Martway and Lamar).

News Update:

Mike's voting record receives 100% approval from the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce - Mike has voted in agreement with the OP Chamber 100% of the time over the last two years! Legislative voting records were were based on a broad array of critical issues - included in the Chamber’s 2010 Legislative Agenda.

Kansas Law Enforcement Lukewarm on Proposed Sex Offender Prostitution Bill - Hiring a prostitute in Kansas could land you on the state's Sex Offender Registry... The measure's sponsor, Rep. Mike Slattery, D-Mission, says that the bill would reduce the demand for prostitution in Kansas. "The idea is to go after sex trafficking," said Slattery.

Kansas House Considers Opting Out Of Health Care Reform - State lawmakers don't want the federal government telling them what to do, but even so, it appears that the rebellion in Kansas does not have enough support to pass."It's turning our constitution into a piñata, that essentially cheapens the document," said Rep. Mike Slattery, a Democrat from Mission. Slattery doesn't want to amend the state constitution because of the issue. "There are pieces I like and pieces I'm concerned with," he said. "Obviously, reform has been desperately needed for decades."

Better odds for a smoking ban this session - Legislators for and against a statewide public smoking ban say this is the year one is most likely to be passed. But for that to happen, according to one of the biggest opponents, lawmakers must work through differences about what exemptions to allow. Representative Mike Slattery, who counts passage of a statewide smoking ban among his top priorities, said he believes that Representative Brenda Landwehr, chairwoman of the House Health and Human Services Committee, will “crack the whip in committee” to prevent a stronger bill from emerging.

Legislative Breakfast Series - The ohnson County Public Policy Council and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Representative Mike Slattery will be among the Legislators discussing issues and answering questions from the audience on Saturday morning, March 13th.

Committee Assignments Update - Committee assignnments for the 2010 legislative session have been released by the Kansas House. In addition to retaining membership on the Local Government, Economic Development and Tourism, and the Health and Human Services Committees, Mike has also been appointed to the important Energy and Utilities Committee.

2009 Voting Record - It is an honor to serve the 24th district, including small businesses and their employees. The Overland Park Chamber of Commerce recently released their voting records for the 2009 legislative session, and I am proud of to have support legislation that will improve the Johnson County area, both for businesses and residents. 2010 "State of the State". Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson delivered his 2010 "State of the State" address to the Kansas Legislature on Monday evening, January 11th. In his address, Governor Parkinson highlighted the budget issues Kansas faces, and noted "...the economy has once again tested the quality and character of the citizens of Kansas, and I am happy to report we have passed every test. On every measurement that matters, the state of the state of Kansas has never been stronger."
